Chapter 18: The Vote

Adam's POV

The board met at eight in a room with ten chairs and one long walnut table.

I took the chair at the head, because I had never given anyone a reason to take it.

Eight people sat down along the sides.

Evan Lacey's uncle sat at the far end, in a navy suit, with a thick folder squared in front of him.

He had been on my board for eleven years.

I had signed his raises myself.

"Adam," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"I called this meeting. I'm sure you remember."

"I called it first." He opened the folder. "I'll be brief. On Saturday night the chairman of this company humiliated a senior employee in front of four hundred guests and fired him on stage. He did it over a personal dispute with a woman he is sleeping with. A woman who was a guest at one of our properties."

A few of them looked at the table.

"I'm moving that the board request his resignation," the uncle said.

"Is there a second?"

Someone seconded, quietly.

I folded my hands.

"Before the vote, I'd like to answer the charges."

"Of course."

"First, the woman." I looked down the table. "Her name is Wendy Carrow. She was a guest of this company, and she paid for every room she stayed in. I did not meet her through my work. I saw her at a gate for eleven hours. I told her who I was three days after I should have."

Nobody spoke.

"I am sleeping with her," I said. "I will go on doing so for as long as she allows it. That is not a secret, and I would not ask you to keep it."

The uncle's pen stopped.
