Chapter 18: The Reunion
The reunion was set up in the living room on Linden Street, with the sofa angled toward three cameras.
Somebody had put fresh tulips on the coffee table.
Dad had left the front door open and the stream running, so that the audience could watch me walk in.
I walked in.
Ronan stayed in my Corolla at the curb with the engine on.
"Nessa," my father said, standing, with his arms wide. "There she is."
He hugged me.
His shirt smelled of starch, and his chin was hard on my head, and he said into my ear so softly that the microphones could not hear, "Do exactly what your mother says."
He let me go and showed me the sofa.
I sat.
Corrine took the chair across from me with a folded blanket on her knee.
Colm was not there.
My mother sat down next to me and took my hand, and hers was ice cold.
She held a sheet of paper in the other.
"Noreen," my father said warmly. "Whenever you're ready."
She smoothed the page on her thigh.
"Nessa," she read. "We forgive you for what you did to this family."
I did not move.
"We forgive the lies. We forgive the money you took from Hearth. We forgive the people you brought into our home."
She stopped, and her breath caught.
"We want you back," she read, in a flat voice. "We want to start again. Please. Come home."
She looked at me.
The camera lights were bright on her eyes, and I saw them fill.
I knew the next line was on the page.
I knew what was supposed to happen next.
I was supposed to cry, and take her hand, and say I was sorry, and the whole world would see.
"That's lovely, Noreen," my father said. "Nessa?"
I looked at my mother.
