Chapter 4: Raw

I almost walked to my car.

I made it as far as the curb.

Then I thought about the motel room and the sixty-four dollars, and I turned around and followed a man I had every reason to hate into a diner on Wyoming Avenue.

The waitress gave us a booth by the window and a look at my smock.

"Coffee," I said.

Ronan ordered nothing.

He opened a laptop on the table, plugged in a small black drive and turned the screen halfway toward me.

"I'll tell you what I'm going to do," he said. "I'm going to play you one clip. You can leave after it."

"Which one?"

"Colm's drone."

It was Sunday, two weeks back.

I remembered the dinner.

There was my brother with his hands in the air, talking about frame rates.

There was Dad at the head of the table with his legal pad.

I watched the screen.

Colm said, "And it's got a three-axis gimbal, so it's basically cinema," and my father said, "Five in favor."

Nobody on the screen moved.

Mom was cutting a piece of chicken.

Corrine was looking at her phone.

I was reaching for the butter.

My hand was nowhere near the air.

"Play it again," I said.

He ran it back.

"Five in favor," my father said, in the same easy voice, while I buttered a roll.

I turned the laptop toward me and played it a third time.

Then I asked, "Where's the part where he counts?"

"There isn't one."

"There has to be. We always count."
