Chapter 9: Ronan's POV

Ronan's POV

She fell asleep at the desk at four in the morning, somewhere in the middle of the first year.

I stopped the playback.

She had her cheek against her fist and her hair across the keyboard, and the dental crown was still on the screen behind her, frozen on her face.

I turned off the monitor.

Then I stood there, because I did not know where to put my hands.

I had told myself for three years that I was an editor.

I cut what the camera got.

The first Sunday I ever filmed in that house, I thought they were the nicest family I had met.

The father shook my hand with both of his.

The mother made me a sandwich.

The girl in the middle carried out the dishes, and when I said thank you she looked surprised.

Then I sat down to cut the vote, and I looked for the hands.

I looked because I like clean timelines.

There were no hands.

I told myself it was shorthand.

I told myself it was a family joke.

I stayed because the check cleared on the first and the fifteenth, and because every time I thought of leaving, another episode arrived with her in it, and I thought somebody should be in the room who knew.

That is not a reason.

It is only what I did.

She stirred in the chair.

I took the gray blanket off the bed and laid it over her shoulders, as quietly as I could.

She woke anyway.

"What time is it?" she said, into her sleeve.
