Chapter 17: Winifred's Last Law
By sunrise the clearing was full to the cedars.
I stood in the middle of the Moon Stone in a clean flannel shirt, with the mark on my neck open to the cold.
Everyone could see it glowing.
Jarrett stood at the edge of the granite, where the trial law told him to stand.
He could not speak for me and he could not touch me.
He kept his hands at his sides, and the muscle in his jaw jumped.
Emmett stood behind him with a hand on his shoulder, holding him in place.
Winifred walked up the three stone steps on the far side with her cane.
She had put on her old gray coat, the one she wore to funerals.
"The blood trial is the Elder's oldest right," she said, in the clear carrying voice of a woman who has never been interrupted.
"A wolf whose blood is questioned stands on the Stone and takes the Elder's word."
"If she bends, she is unfit. If she holds, the question is closed."
"And the Elder cannot lie to the challenged," the chair said from the crowd, "or the trial is void."
"I have never lied to this pack," Winifred said.
