Chapter 22: The Chart

The first slideshow I ever gave was on October 23, to a Statistics class, and the class laughed at my map.

The second was on Saturday, January 16.

The audience was the Miami-Dade County Commission, a Governor's aide, three hundred members of Gate Watch and the Ready Guard, and four television cameras.

I built it in two nights on Abuela's pantry stool.

The data was not hard to find.

I had asked Baptiste for the list of every gate in Florida with its class, and he sent it in two hours, with no questions.

The state had the other half.

Every ammunition retailer in Florida had reported its sales to the Governor's office after Gun Day, by county.

The Governor had wanted a number to read on television.

The Governor's number had matched the Registry's to the thousand, and I used them both.

I put sixty-seven counties in a spreadsheet and sorted them by rounds fired.

I made three columns.

In thirty-one counties, fewer than 100,000 rounds had been fired since Gun Day, and the biggest gate in every one was Class I.

In twenty-five counties, between 100,000 and a million, nineteen had only Class I gates and six had a Class II.

In eleven counties, more than a million rounds had been fired, and every one of them had a Class II.

Miami-Dade, where the Ready Guard had fired six hundred thousand rounds on one stretch of one road, was the tallest bar.
