Chapter 24: The Port
The gate at PortMiami opened at dawn on Saturday, February 6, in the baggage hall of Terminal F.
A cruise ship was docked fifty feet away with 3,900 passengers on board.
The cruise line had offered them a complimentary buffet.
A Coast Guard cutter held the channel behind the ship, and Joelle was on its bow in a survival suit, watching us through binoculars.
She had asked to be on the water side, in case it went wrong, and I had not argued.
They were lined along the rails of the upper decks in bathrobes, holding cups, and some of them had their phones up to film.
The terminal sat on Dodge Island, between the channel and the cranes.
The Inside, when the gray disc spread across the floor, was the terminal as the county had filed it in 1971.
It was a long shed of salt-white walls, with the old baggage carousels drawn in crust.
At the far end a gangway led up into nothing.
The Warden stood at the top of the gangway.
I read it from the threshold, with my back to the oval and the federal agents behind me in a column of black vests.

Six more cards opened under it, six Class II, spaced along the shed like furniture.
They were not Anchors, only company, and they were between us and the stairs.
"Mr. Quesada," said Baptiste at my elbow.
He had put on a helmet and a vest that said FGA across the chest in white.
