Chapter 24: Green on My Own Terms
The new showroom opened on the first Saturday in March, on a corner of Fourth Street with a window you could see across the block.
Above the door hung a sign in plain black letters.
Thornbury & Sorensen Kitchen and Bath.
I had stood in front of it for ten minutes that morning, before anyone else arrived, reading my own name.
The dress was hanging on my bedroom door when I woke up.
It was forest green, soft wool crepe, cut to my body, with long sleeves and a neckline I liked.
There was no tag inside that said anything but my size, and I had paid for it myself.
I had also told Abel the night before, over takeout on the floor of our new kitchen, and he had set down his chopsticks and put his forehead against my stomach and not said anything for a very long time.
Fourteen weeks.
It was the same number Bethany had said to me in my own living room.
It sounded completely different in my mouth.
"You're sure?" he had asked.
"Three tests and a doctor," I said. "She also told me my side was never the problem."
