Chapter 13: Where the Camera Could See

Wynne walked out of the sunroom with wet coffee on her sleeve and nowhere to put her hands.

Behind her, Aurelio asked Rosanna to pass the jam.

She went down the back stairs because the front hall had a camera on every landing.

At the bottom, in the pantry hall, a man was sitting on the floor with his back against the shelves.

It was Fabrizio.

He must have slipped out of the sunroom in the confusion of the spill, and she had not seen him go.

His splinted hand lay in his lap.

In the other hand he held a bottle of grappa, already half gone, though it was not yet eight in the morning.

"Look who it is," he said. "The bride."

She stopped three steps above him.

"Go sleep it off, Fabrizio."

"Here? This is where we met." He patted the floor beside him. "Right here. Under the little red light."

She looked up.

The camera over the pantry door was blinking at them.

"Your uncle has the tape," she said. "He showed me."

"He showed you." Fabrizio laughed, and it turned into a cough. "He shows everybody everything, in the end. That's how he keeps you."

"Why are you sitting here?"

"Because I'm done being the only one in this house who gets blamed." He drank. "Do you know what my uncle said when Massimo took my fingers? He clapped. He clapped, Wynne. Then he looked at me and said, finally, my nephew is useful."

She came down one more step.
