Chapter 28: Sentencing
"When?" I said.
"Her sentencing. August nineteenth, nine a.m." The receiver paused. "Bring someone to hold the deed. It's heavier than you'd think."
On the nineteenth of August the Itasca County courtroom was full by eight thirty.
The fan still ticked.
The same gray-haired judge sat under it with her half-glasses.
Behind me, every bench was full.
The church ladies. The old woman from table six with her cane across her knees. The man in the plaid sport coat in a tie.
The document examiner in her sun visor, knitting.
The state examiner in the front row, without a ribbon this time.
Leif sat beside me in the deacon shirt with his hand on my knee to keep it from bouncing.
They brought Marlys in through the side door.
She wore orange. Her silver bob had grown out flat and gray at the roots.
There were no pearls. They don't let you keep earrings in jail.
Her hand went up to her ear anyway, and found nothing, and came down.
Erik sat at the next table in a navy suit, his hair cut short for court.
He didn't look at his mother.
The judge read the plea into the record.
