Chapter 32: Open
"Yes," I said. "We rent Room Nine."
His shoulders came down like he'd been waiting the whole drive.
"Okay. Good. Okay."
He put his cap on the desk and took it back.
"I read about it last summer," he said. "The bank, the letters. My girlfriend read it out loud to me in the car."
"Most of the state did."
"She cried at the part with the canoe."
He went red to the ears.
"I want to ask her to marry me. In that room. If that's a weird thing to want."
Behind me in the kitchen, Hedy dropped a spoon.
"It's not weird," I said.
I opened the reservation book to July.
Every room was taken through Labor Day. Room Nine had been booked since February, one couple after another, all summer.
Except one night.
I'd left it blank without telling anybody why.
"July third," I said. "It's the only night it's free."
"Is that a good night?"
"It's the best night that room has."
He wrote his name in the book in careful print.
I gave him a card. Plain white, Room Nine, July 3, in my handwriting.
He put it in his wallet.
