Chapter 8: Returned Letters
I read the two lines again.
Then I handed the page to Leif.
He sat down on the edge of the white iron bed with the letter in both hands.
"She said yes," he said.
"She said yes and he never came."
"He came." His voice was rough. "He got as far as the bank."
He pulled his duffel bag out from under the bed.
He unzipped it on the braided rug and took out a shoebox held shut with a rubber band.
"These were in his shop," he said. "In the drawer with the good chisels."
He laid them out on the quilt.
Letters in Gran's hand, addressed to him in Duluth, postmarked 1979, 1980, the spring of 1981.
Every one opened. Every one soft from being read.
I laid Gran's eleven returned letters in a row beside them.
July 6. July 9. July 14. On through the fall.
On his side of the bed was a whole courtship.
On her side was a woman knocking on a door that didn't open.
The last thing in his shoebox was a single sheet folded in thirds, never in an envelope.
Motel stationery. The Pines Motor Inn, Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
July 3, 1981, in the first Leif's square print.
The man at the bank told me you were married last Saturday. He showed me it in the paper. I hope he is good to you. I left the money anyway. It was always yours.
"He never sent it," he said.
I picked up one of Gran's returned envelopes and held it to the lamp.
The postmark was Loon Lake, July 6, 1981.
There was no second postmark.
"It never left town," I said.
"A letter that goes to Duluth gets a Duluth mark. Every one of his has one."
"None of hers do."
