Chapter 6: The Harvest Feast

The Harvest Moon feast filled the great hall to the rafters.

Three hundred wolves came, in pack grey and good wool, and every one of them wanted a look at the breeder.

Anselm had found me a dress the color of dark wine, with a neckline that stopped short of the brand.

Matvei waited for me at the foot of the high table in black, and for a moment he forgot to arrange his face.

His eyes went down the dress and back up to my hair.

"You'll do," he said.

"That's all?"

"It's what I can say in front of the council."

He offered his arm.

I took it, because the hall was watching, and walked up the aisle with my knee almost healed and my chin high.

The seat beside his was carved oak with a high back.

I sat in it.

Servants brought plates. Matvei put the first slice of venison on mine with his own hands.

That was the custom, Anselm had told me. The Alpha feeds his claim.

I ate, and the wolves watched every bite.

The elder rose halfway through the second course.

He had a cup in his hand and an expression I knew from the Madam's front hall.

"A toast," he said, "to the Alpha's guest."

A few of the older men chuckled.

"A human, a breeder, brought in off the road," he went on. "I only wonder what it is she'll bear. A wolf's heir needs strong blood, and I've seen what House Lark sends us."

I put down my fork.

"Perhaps the Alpha could tell us what he sees in her," the elder said. "Besides the obvious."

The hall laughed.

Matvei rose.

He did it slowly, and the laughter stopped before he reached his full height.

"You want to know what I see," he said.

"If the pack may ask."
