Chapter 11: Son

Raymond stayed in my mother's house for an hour and ten minutes.

I know because I sat at Nana's kitchen window and watched the black car the whole time.

Quinton didn't watch.

He sat at the table in dry socks, playing gin rummy with my grandmother for a dollar a hand, and losing on purpose.

"He's telling them who you are," I said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because he's collecting witnesses." Quinton laid down a card. "A mother who'll say her daughter married a stranger off the street for money. An ex who'll say she was cheating with him. It all helps on the second."

"My mother wouldn't."

He looked up at me.

"Gin," said Nana, and slapped her cards down. "Pay up, son."

At nine the next morning my mother knocked on the cottage door holding a breakfast casserole.

She was in full makeup and her cream cashmere wrap.

"Good morning!" she said, to Quinton, past me. "I made my sausage and egg. I thought, these poor kids, eating pie for breakfast."

"Mama."

"Katie, honey, don't stand in the door, you're letting the heat out."

She came in.

She put the casserole on Nana's counter without looking at Nana.

Then she turned to Quinton, who was standing by the stove in his T-shirt with a cup of coffee, and she smiled at him.

"Quinton," she said warmly. "I owe you an apology. I didn't know."

"Know what, Mrs. Verrill?"

"Diane, please. You're family." She laid her hand on his arm. "I didn't know you were going through such a hard time. Mr. Stuyvesant explained everything. Your poor family. The pressure you've been under."

"Did he."

"He's very worried about you. He's a lovely man." She squeezed his arm. "And I just want you to know that whatever you need, we're here for you. Son."
