Chapter 19: The Vote

"Sit down, Quinton," Raymond said gently. "You look tired."

Quinton didn't sit.

He pulled out the chair at the foot of the table, the one facing his uncle, and held it for me.

I sat.

Then he stood behind me with one hand on the back of the chair.

The nine board members sat back down slowly.

"We'll keep this short," Raymond said. "I move that we vote now, before any presentation, on my nephew's capacity. I have a letter from a psychiatrist."

"Has the psychiatrist met me?" Quinton said.

"He's read the file."

"I've been in the file," Quinton said. "It's cold in there, and nobody brings coffee."

A woman at the middle of the table pressed her lips together.

"We'll hear both sides, Raymond," she said. "That's why we're all here at eight."

Raymond didn't look at him.

"I'm not here to be cruel. I love my brother's son. But this company can't be run by a man who isn't well." He turned his soft smile to my mother. "Mrs. Verrill has come a long way to tell you about the woman he married. Her own daughter."

My mother folded her hands on the black table.

She didn't look at me.

"My daughter has always been drawn to lost causes," she said in her Junior League voice. "She is not a bad girl. But she is a poor one, and she has a talent for finding a man's soft spot. She found this one under a bridge."
