Chapter 11: The Folder

I was in the cardiac unit at six the next morning, before the nurses finished their shift change.

Loyd was propped up in a hospital gown with an IV in his arm and a plastic bracelet on his wrist.

The surgery was at eight.

I shut the door behind me.

"Where did the eleven million go?" I said.

He closed his eyes.

"Dinah told you."

"Dinah showed me a laptop. I want you to tell me."

"Rex."

"The last account in the chain was mine."

For a long time the only sound was the heart monitor.

Then he opened his eyes and pointed at the locker by the window.

"The banker's box," he said. "Bottom. There's a blue folder."

I got it out.

It was thick and soft with age, and across the front, written in a woman's looping hand:

THE OPEN DOOR.

My hands were not steady as I opened it.

The first page was a letter on cream paper, dated the winter I turned twelve.

I read it standing up, in her handwriting.

"Loyd. The boy is going to need more than a coat."

"I have a little money of my mother's. Let's start there."

"Do not tell him. Do not tell the children."

"A kindness with a name attached is a loan. Your wife."

I could barely see the page.

I turned it over.

Behind it was a receipt from a bursar's office in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for my freshman tuition.

Then another, and another.

Ten years of tuition and rent and winter coats, each one stamped paid, about four million dollars in all.
