Chapter 21: Cedar Lane Again
At six o'clock Loyd stood on his own front walk, in the last light, holding a new brass key.
Lorna had put it in his hand an hour before, wrapped in a dish towel, without a word.
The sold tags were gone from the porch.
The green door was shut.
Dinah and I stood behind him on the walk, and the nurse stood behind us with a folding wheelchair she was not allowed to use.
"Go on," I said.
Loyd walked up the three steps.
He fitted the key into the lock, and turned it, and it turned.
He did not go in.
He stood there with his palm flat on the green paint.
"Ten days that door wouldn't open for me," he said.
"And now?"
"Now I think I'll go in."
The house smelled of lemon polish.
The floral sofa sat in the front room where it had always been, with a paper invoice taped to one arm.
The crew had carried the piano home from the annex that afternoon, and it stood against the far wall.
PAID. W. CORBETT.
"Daylight," I said, when he looked at me.
