Gaston Theriot had commanded a pack for four years, and he had never been so afraid of a word.
*For good.*
He sat on the leather couch with his hands open on his knees and looked at the man in front of him.
Emile stood half dressed in the lamplight, a cut-glass bead of sweat at his collarbone, his throat bare.
He had asked for the bite.
A wolf's mark on a human was not a love bite.
It was a lifetime.
It meant a scent that no other wolf could mistake.
It meant a bond that tugged in the chest when they were apart, and a protection that would hold against anything on four legs.
It could not be taken back.
"You know what it means," Gaston said.
"Fabien told me," Emile said.
"Did he tell you that it is for us as well as you? That if you die we feel it?"
"He did," Emile said.
"And that you could leave us tomorrow and we would still be yours?" Gaston said. "That you would never be rid of us?"
"Gaston." Emile smiled, and it cracked something in his chest. "Are you trying to talk me out of it?"
