Chapter 12: The Same Day

Devon's POV

Kellan came back to the cabin at noon with nothing in his hands.

I had found his note under the lamp and made coffee twice.

"Where were you?" I asked.

"Highridge. I went to see Vernon."

"Without me."

"Without you." He stood in the doorway and didn't come in. "He offered me an easement to stay out of it. I said no. Dane's wolf is failing and he'll get worse, and Vernon is frightened."

"Is that everything?"

He looked at me for a long moment.

"That's everything about Dane," he said.

I let it go.

I should not have, and I knew it as I did.

He went outside to split kindling, and I stood at the window and watched his back, and I did not say what I thought.

Emmett came at dusk.

He stopped at the edge of the gravel where Brianna had stopped, and he waited, and he did not try to cross.

"Dev. May I?"

"You can come to the porch."

He climbed the steps heavily.

"I'm not here for me," he said. "Vernon called the four of us into his study at lunch and told us. All of it. Dane was sick in the hall afterward."

"Told you what?"

"The oath." His voice cracked. "It's not what we thought. It's not a ceremony. It's a leash, and you're what it's tied to."

He told me everything, in a flat low voice, with his eyes on the boards.

I sat down on the top step.

"Did you know?" I asked. "Any of you?"

"Not until noon." Emmett finally looked up. "I'm here because I won't stand in that house and pretend I still don't."
