Chapter 11: The Missing Hour

Fenn didn't try to take the sketchbook back.

He sat down on the library floor where he'd been standing, slowly.

"I was on the stairs," he said. "At ten past one."

"Which stairs?"

"The roof stairs. Bram came down past me looking like he wanted to punch the building. I sat on the landing for ten minutes. Then I went up to check on you."

"And?"

"You were at the rail with Wyatt." He swallowed. "With one of us. In the suit. He was holding your hand. You were laughing."

"You couldn't see his face."

"He had his back to the door. Then you both walked past me, and I turned to the wall like a coward."

"So you followed us."

"Three blocks. To the chapel." He looked at the drawing on my knees. "I sat in the back pew. He never turned around."

Fenn's voice dropped. "Not even to kiss you. He held your face in both hands and kept his back to the room."

I remembered that.

His hands on my face, and the plastic flowers, and the officiant's bored voice.

I had thought he was being romantic.

He had been hiding.

"Why didn't you stop it?" I asked.

Fenn looked at me with his gray eyes, so sad behind his glasses that it hurt.

"You looked happy," he said. "I've never stopped anything in my life. And I thought it was Bram, gone back up."

"It wasn't Bram."

Fenn put his face in his hands. "Then I sat in that pew and watched Cian or Ewan marry you, and I drew it."

That night I called a meeting on the roof.
