Four Deacons Drove Out My Father, So I Brought Them to Their Knees novel · Chapter 23 of 24
Chapter 23: Easter
On Easter Sunday every pew in Greater Bethel was full.
It was the day I had written on the plane, the one date on my list.
The church had come out in white hats and pastel suits to fill the room for it.
I sat in the third pew in a white dress with my father's burial program folded in my hand.
The four deacons sat in the front pew in a row, with their hats on their knees.
They had not asked me to sit with them.
I had asked myself to sit apart.
The choir sang, and the pastor read the empty tomb.
When he finished, he closed the Bible and looked down the aisle at me.
"The floor is open for testimony," he said. "Is there anyone who would speak?"
I stood up.
I heard the pews creak as every head came around.
I walked down the center aisle for the second time since Christmas.
I stopped at the front, at the altar rail, with the communion table beside me under its white cloth.
I turned and faced them.
I had the speech in my head.
I had written it on a plane in October, and I had carried it for six months, and I had meant it for this room.
"My name is Naomi Gervais," I said. "My father was Samuel Gervais."
