Chapter 6: The Garage

I went to the Larchmont garage alone, as he had asked.

I also took my own car, parked it facing the exit, and set my phone to record before I opened the door.

Level P2 smelled of damp concrete.

Porter stood next to a pillar in a gray hooded sweatshirt, with his hands in the pouch and his shoulders pulled up.

He had not shaved.

"You came," he said.

"I'm recording this," I said. "Start talking."

He glanced at the phone in my hand and swallowed.

Then he laughed, one short dry sound.

"Fine. Good. Maybe you should."

"Why am I here, Porter?"

"Because I'm the only one in that family who is afraid of him."

I waited.

"Harlan didn't just tell me to move the money," he said. "He told me to do all of it. The account, the dressing room, the time."

"Say the time."

"Before three. He said you would be crying by quarter past, and that your mother would never see her notary." He took one hand out and rubbed his face. "He said if I did it, I'd be partner by Christmas."

"Partner."

"Stroud Homes. My name on the door. He had it drawn up."

"And Blair?"

"Blair wanted it." He did not look at me. "She has wanted me since the engagement party. Harlan only gave her permission."

I held very still, so that my voice would stay level.

"Six years," I said.

"I know."

"You asked me to marry you in my own kitchen."

"I know, Margo."

"You told me you were scared of how much you loved me."

He closed his eyes.

"I was scared," he said. "I just wasn't scared enough."

I took one step forward and stopped.

"Where is my money?"

"That's why I called you."

He pulled a folded paper from his sweatshirt and held it out.
