Chapter 4: Porch

Nobody breathed.

The car door slammed again, and boots crossed the gravel toward the porch.

In one smooth motion Abel pulled my shirt down and the sheet up, and the four of them were gone from the bed before I heard the knock.

They did not run.

They simply went, silent, out through the hall light and down the back stairs.

I waited a moment, then sat up.

Someone pounded on the front door.

"Bethany! I know you're in there!"

I put on my robe and went down.

Clint stood at the bottom of the stairs in jeans and a T-shirt, with his hair wet.

Abel was behind him, scratching his beard.

Neither of them looked at me.

"I'll handle it," Clint said.

"No," I said. "I will."

I opened the door.

Brock stood on the porch with a folder under one arm and his breath smelling of bourbon.

The new fiancée sat in a white SUV in the yard with the engine running.

"It's three in the morning," I said.

"It's the only time you'd be home to sign." He held up the folder. "It's a listing agreement. Your signature, and the others will fall in line. They won't dare to fight a Kilbourn."

Eli came up the hall behind me, barefoot.

Lyle was behind him.

"They don't own anything but their shares," Brock said, looking past me. "A farmhand, a deputy, a horse doctor and a barman. Your father threw you a bone and you think it's a family."

"It's a family," I said.

I said it before I knew I would.

"You hurt my feelings, Brock. You embarrassed me in front of the whole church. And now you've come at three in the morning to a house where my father just died." I took the folder out of his hand. "No."
