Chapter 28: Stay
The knock came at seven in the morning, three slow raps on her front door.
Missy was in the kitchen in her robe with a mug and a cat on her feet.
She opened the door, and Chan stood on the porch in yesterday's coat.
Felix stood at the foot of the steps with his hands in his pockets, six feet back and clearly going nowhere.
Chan had shaved badly, and there was a nick under his jaw.
"I'm knocking," he said.
"I heard."
"I haven't got a speech. I tried three. They all had a plan in them."
"Good."
"I'm asking," Chan said. "I don't have the answer and I'm asking anyway. Do you want me to come back?"
She looked at him for a long moment.
Once, at three in the morning in this kitchen, he had come close enough to ask it and had not.
Now he had, and he stood waiting for the answer.
"Yes," she said. "On terms."
"Anything."
"Don't say anything, honey. You said anything to the company."
He shut his mouth.
"One. When something costs you, you say so before it's signed. Two. When you're scared, you tell one of us that same hour. Three, and this is the one that matters." She put the mug on the rail. "When I'm angry, you stay in the room."
"I'll stay."
"Then come inside."
Felix lifted two fingers from his pocket, turned and went off down the lane without a word.
Chan followed her up the stairs.
In the bedroom the rain made the window grey and soft.
She sat on the edge of the bed and untied her robe, and let it fall open.
He stood in front of her with his hands at his sides.
"Take off your coat," she said.
He did, and then his sweater, and the shirt under it, and then he looked at her.
"Kneel."
He went down on his knees on the rug, and his eyes were wet and fixed on hers.
