Chapter 16: Next to Me
Blaine was waiting on the Wacker Drive sidewalk at ten to eight on Monday.
He stood beside the revolving door in the pressed shirt he wore to church, holding a cream envelope in both hands.
Across the street a man in a grey hoodie leaned on a railing with a long lens hanging at his chest.
Nate and I had come in from the garage, and we stopped on the pavement together.
"Jo," Blaine said.
"Blaine."
"I won't make a scene."
"You drove five hours with a letter. That's the scene."
His jaw moved.
He held the envelope out, and when I didn't take it, he pressed it against my coat until my hand closed on it.
I opened it where I stood.
It was one page from a law firm I knew by name, the same one that had signed the nine pages I'd never read.
It said I had removed "jointly held household property" from the residence on Alder Court.
It listed the ring, a set of dishes, a car seat, and forty-one thousand five hundred dollars of "gifts and advances."
It said I would return all of it within fourteen days.
The last paragraph said I was to have "no direct contact with the minor child pending resolution."
I read the last paragraph twice.
"You've cut Birdie off," I said.
"It's pending resolution."
"Of what?"
"Of this." His eyes went to Nate and came back. "I saw the picture, Jo. I've been patient. I've been so patient. And you're in a glass room kissing your boss while my daughter asks where you are."
