Chapter 19: Silver Shot
The barrel stopped an arm's length from my chest.
I looked at it and then at Anson.
"Go on," I said. "Fire it."
"Don't think I won't."
"You kept my hands whole for fourteen years. Now you want to put a hole in me?"
His finger tightened on the trigger.
Then Dalton came out of the crowd at a run, still in his wolf shape, and hit him in the ribs with his shoulder.
The rifle went off.
The shot tore up the grass a yard from my foot, and the smell of burned silver rolled across the meadow.
Dalton and Anson went down in a heap.
Anson was bigger. He got a forearm across Dalton's throat and reared up with the rifle in his other hand.
He never swung it.
A hand closed on the barrel from behind. It was Garson, naked to the waist and white to the lips.
"Put it down," Garson said.
"Let go of this."
"No."
Garson wrenched it out of his hand and threw it into the creek.
Then the pack came.
They did not charge. They walked, from every side, in their human skin and their wolf skin, sixty of them closing the ring.
Nobody touched him. Nobody had to.
Anson stood up with his chest heaving and looked at the faces around him.
He knew all of them. He had given orders to all of them for years.
"I'm your Beta," he said. "I'm the heir. You'll follow me when he dies."
Nobody answered.
"She sleeps with Stonepine's Alpha," he said, louder. "She'll hand you all to him. Are you going to follow a woman who opens her legs for a rival pack?"
