Chapter 21: Ask Me Three Times

Kieran's POV

Stonepine's bond ceremony takes place on the ridge at dusk, with the whole pack watching, and the Alpha has to ask three times.

I had never been afraid of anything on that ridge.

I stood at the old stone with two hundred of my own people behind me and my hands wet.

Nessa came up the path in a plain grey dress with the Council's seal pinned at her shoulder and her mother's brooch at her collar.

She stopped in front of me.

I could hear my Beta's mate sniffling somewhere in the crowd, and I did not look.

"Nessa Aldercott," I said. "Alpha of Hollow Creek. Will you be mine?"

"Ask me again."

That was the custom, and I had been told to expect it.

"Will you stay with me?" I said.

"Once more."

"Will you let me stay with you?" My voice cracked in the middle. "In your house, on your land, as long as you'll have me. I'll ask every year if I have to."

She smiled.

It started in her eyes and spread, and I felt it in my chest.

"Yes," she said. "To all three. And Kieran?"

"What?"

"You'll never have to ask every year. You've already got me."

The ridge broke into noise.

I kissed her in front of both packs, and I did not care who saw how long it lasted.

We left them to the feast.

She took my hand and pulled me up the old track to the high ridge.

We went past the last of the lanterns, to where the pines opened and the stars came down.

"Where are we going?" I said.
