Chapter 5: Four Paws

I did not know what to do with four legs.

I tried to stand and fell on my face in the snow.

I tried again and got up shaking, with my breath coming out of my nose in two white clouds.

My wolf was grey, pale and silver.

I could see my own paws, and I could smell the whole yard at once. Woodsmoke, cedar, bacon frying in the kitchen, a fox that had crossed the fence an hour ago.

It was too much, and it was wonderful.

Someone shouted inside the lodge.

Doors banged open. Wolves in blankets and boots spilled into the yard and stopped in a ring around me.

I flattened my ears and backed toward the fence.

"Stay back," a voice said. "Give her room."

The Beta's mate pushed through the crowd with her hands up. She was crying, and she was smiling.

"Look at her," she said. "Look. I told her."

Kieran came last.

He was in trousers, barefoot in the snow, with his shirt half buttoned and his face wide open.

Nobody had ever looked at me like that. He looked at my wolf and could not stop.

Then he turned his head, and his shoulders rolled, and the black wolf was standing in the yard where the man had been.

He lowered his head. He did not come closer.

He stood there and let me look at him.

I don't know who moved first. Maybe it was me.

I ran.

The ring parted for me and I went through it and over the fence in one long jump I had no right to make.
