Chapter 8: Margot at Midnight
Margot was standing under the gate lantern with her arms around herself.
She had no coat. Her blonde hair was down, which I had not seen in years, and a dark mark lay across her left cheekbone.
Two Stonepine sentries held spears crossed in front of her.
"I only want to talk to my sister," she said when she saw me. Her voice was small. "Please, Nessa."
"You have a minute."
"Dad hit me."
I said nothing.
"Tonight, in his study. He said it was my fault you left. That I pushed too hard." She touched the bruise and winced. "I know how that sounds, coming from me."
"It sounds like a story."
"It is not a story."
She held out her hand, palm up.
On it lay a small silver brooch in the shape of a wolf's head, tarnished, with a chip missing from one ear.
I knew it before my eyes finished seeing it.
My mother had worn it every day. I had not seen it since the night of the fire.
"I took it from her dressing table the day after," Margot said. "I was thirteen. I told myself I'd give it back when you were older, and then you were older, and I couldn't."
My throat closed.
I took the brooch. It was cold, and it fit my palm exactly.
