Chapter 12: Eleven Years Is a Long Time

Tiernan didn't come any closer.

He stood in the doorway with his hands at his sides, and I could feel through the bond that he had stopped on purpose.

"That's the order," he said.

"I know what it is."

"I was ten. My father was alpha, and the heir signs every council order as a witness. It's custom. They put a pen in my hand and told me it was a feast-day list."

"And you believed them."

"I was ten."

I looked at the round little letters under his aunt's signature.

"I found it in my father's safe at eighteen," he said. "I read it standing up. Then I sat on the floor of his study until it was dark."

"You didn't go to the council."

"My aunt is the council. Half of them helped her, and the other half were afraid of her." His voice cracked. "I had no proof that wasn't paper, and the paper had my name on it."

"So you looked for me."

"Every day."

"I read your notes," I said. "Not her. Keep looking."

His eyes closed.

"I thought you might be dead," he said. "I thought if I found you, you'd only be a grave."

"I'm not."

"No." His eyes opened, and they were wet. "You came into my suite with a can of mace and a flip phone, and you charged my beta three hundred and fifty dollars."
