Chapter 17: The Petition

Dorian's POV

I have sat in judgment for a hundred and eighty years, and I had never once wanted to leave the high seat until that morning.

The hearing was held in the great hall, three days after my daughter was born.

I thought of her that way already, and nobody had asked me to.

Morwenna sat on the Rooke bench with the baby asleep against her shoulder.

She had refused to leave her upstairs.

"If he wants her," she had said, "he can say so to her face."

Garrick stood in the middle of the floor, thinner than before, with his left arm in its linen sling.

Verity stood eight feet behind him, because she was still bound to stand at his side, and neither of them could bear it.

The old grey-bearded law-keeper read out the petition in a dry voice.

"The petitioner is the child's father by blood, and asks the Court to give him the right of guardianship over her."

"On what ground?" I asked.

"The Moon Law gives every wolf father a claim on his pup," the law-keeper said. "It is void only if he has sought the death of the child or of her mother."

"And has he?"

The law-keeper turned a page.

"He has been named by three witnesses. The Moot found it so."

"Then the claim is void."

"It is," the law-keeper said. "Unless the mother wishes to restore it."

I did not move.
