Chapter 23: No Chair
I stared at the text on Kath's phone, with the rain running off my hair onto the screen.
Four votes to three.
The board chair had sat at the stern of a ferry and told me to do it in daylight.
Now she wasn't on the board.
"That was the whole back half," I said. "She was going to call the vote. In the front row. With him standing there."
"I know," Kath said.
"There's no front row now. There's just his."
Jem took my keys out of my hand.
He didn't unlock my door.
He unlocked the shop's back door instead, and held it, and the three of us went in out of the rain.
Kath put the kettle on the hot plate.
She was shaking a little, and she said it was the pajama pants.
I sat on the old key-cutter's stool with my coat dripping on the floor.
I started talking.
"Okay. Okay. Without the chair, he flips the switch, I say no, and the room watches him get mad. And then the investors walk out and say I lied to him, and they'd be right."
