Chapter 13: Shift

I did not remember the elevator ride down.

I remembered the lobby doors.

Orson came off the wall where he had been waiting.

He saw my eyes, and his face changed.

"It's awake," I said.

"I heard."

"All of it?"

"All of it." His hand closed on my arm. "Can you walk?"

"I don't know."

"Then don't."

He took me out through a service door, and the car was already at the curb with the engine running.

Nobody spoke on the way to Crane Tower.

My skin felt too small.

Every sound in the car came at me separately.

I heard the tires, the driver's pulse and the click of the turn signal.

Under all of it was the smell of Orson, cedar and cold air and something I had no word for.

By the time we reached his floor my hands were shaking so badly I could not push the elevator button.

"Keira."

"Something is wrong."

"Nothing is wrong. It's coming up." He steered me through his office and shut the door. "You've had it locked for eighteen years. It wants out all at once."

"Out where?"

"Out of you."

My knees went.

He caught me before I hit the carpet and lowered me down with his arm under my shoulders.
