Chapter 20: The Elders
Thursday midnight came and went, and I did not give Broderick an answer.
On Friday night the atrium was fuller than it had been on Tuesday.
Wolves stood on the staircase and along the gallery rails.
The Kingsley pack had come in a body and filled the whole east side of the floor.
The old elder sat in the center of the platform with her cane across her knees.
She nodded at me once.
Broderick stood to her left in a black suit.
Derrick had told me Broderick's gold ring was mended with silver wire.
Blair was not beside him.
"Broderick Davenant," said the old elder. "You called this hearing. Say what you accuse."
"That Keira Duggan is a feral." Broderick's voice carried, but I heard the strain in it. "That she attacked her Alpha in his own office and that she has been turned by the Crane Pack."
"Have you proof?"
"I have my ribs. I have my ring."
A few wolves in the crowd murmured agreement.
"Keira Duggan," said the old elder. "Answer."
I stepped up onto the platform.
I did not use notes.
"I was nine when your last Alpha had my wolf sealed," I said. "My mother signed because she was told I was dying. Broderick held my hand while it was done. He has known for eighteen years."
"The card proves nothing," said Broderick.
"No, it doesn't. This does."
I looked at Derrick.
He came up through the crowd with the leather case in both hands, and he laid it on the platform in front of the old elder.
