Chapter 16: Dawn Council
They gave me three minutes to dress.
Two guards stood outside my garret door, and Percival stood inside it, with his back against the wall and his eyes on me.
I pulled a cream sweater over my head and found a skirt.
"Your hands are shaking," I said.
"Yes."
"Come here."
He came.
I took his hands and put them on my waist, and he held on.
I kissed him, once, hard.
His fingers slid under the hem of my sweater and spread flat over my bare back.
I slid mine down the front of his trousers, and he was already hard, and he groaned into my mouth.
"Two minutes," came a voice through the door.
"I cannot walk into that room like this," he whispered.
"Think of the Council."
I squeezed him, once, long and slow, and let go.
He leaned his forehead on mine and breathed.
"Keep that for me," I said. "I want it back tonight."
"It is yours."
I opened the door and went out between the guards, with my chin up and my sweater on backwards.
The great hall had been cleared of its long tables.
Eleven Councilmen sat in a horseshoe of high chairs under the banners, with grey faces and cold hands.
