Chapter 15: Daphne
The Throckmorton hospital benefit luncheon was the one room Gordon couldn't skip, and he sent Daphne in his place.
Lucinda saw her from the door.
She sat at the head table in a cream suit, between two donors, laughing at something one of them said.
In the seat that should have been the chairwoman's.
"She's in my chair," Lucinda said.
"I know," Alden said.
He stood at her side with his hands empty and his mouth set.
"Do you want to leave?"
"No."
She walked in.
The room noticed her one table at a time.
Forks stopped, and a hundred and fifty donors turned in their seats.
Daphne looked up, and the smile stayed on her face a second too long.
"Lucinda," she said brightly. "What a surprise."
"Is it?"
"Gordon asked me to fill in. I'm so glad you came."
"Daphne." Lucinda stopped at the head of the table. "Which of us told Pierce when Alden was filing?"
The nearest donor set down his glass.
"I'm sorry?" Daphne said.
"Alden told exactly two people the date. He told his lawyer, and he told you. The lawyer is seventy and has never met a Throckmorton."
"That's absurd."
"Two men were waiting at my bus stop the same morning I signed. I didn't have a phone in my hand. I didn't have an address in the city. Somebody told them where."
"I don't even know your cousin."
"No?"
"I met him once. At a party."
"Which party?"
"I don't remember."
Lucinda waited.
She had waited beside a hospital bed for eleven hours once, for a man to breathe on his own.
She could outwait a woman in a cream suit.
"Daphne," Alden said, from behind her. His voice was quiet. "Look at me."
Daphne looked at him.
