Chapter 17: The Study
My father's study smelled of cigar smoke and old paper.
It was the room where he had told me, at twelve, that my mother was not coming home.
It was also the room where my brother's photograph stood on the desk, in a silver frame, laughing at something outside the picture.
Carlo Maradei did not sit.
He stood at the window with his back to me and his signet ring turning on his finger.
"The headmaster called at ten," he said. "The old man Dellarocca called at ten past.
"Do you know what he said to me?"
"No."
"He said, 'Your daughter has a loud mouth for a girl who is about to become family.'
"And I said nothing, Livia.
"Nothing.
"I stood in my own kitchen and I said nothing."
He turned around.
His eyes were red.
I took the leather book out of my school bag and laid it on his desk, next to my brother's frame.
