Chapter 14: Pancake Supper
Three hundred people eat pancakes with a great deal of noise, right up until somebody taps a microphone.
The Lions Club hall had a stage at one end and a raffle table at the other, and a flag that had hung there since Korea.
Colby and I sat at a long table in the middle with his mother between us and his father on the aisle.
His father had put on a tie.
It was the only part of him that moved.
"What will you do?" I whispered across his wife.
"Say what's on the paper," he said. "It's all I brought."
Ginny came up the steps to the stage in her Lions vest, with a clipboard, to polite applause.
She tapped the microphone twice and smiled over the room.
"Friends, I won't keep you from your pancakes."
A few people laughed.
"But I want to say something about this town, and what it does when a family's in trouble."
"We bring a casserole. We sit up with the dying. And we don't let our own be taken advantage of."
She didn't look at me.
She looked at Colby, kindly.
"Thirty-seven years ago a Henning shook a Stiles by the hand over eighty acres of creek bottom, and ever since, that family has wanted it back."
"This spring a Henning married my niece the same week my father-in-law was laid to rest."
The room went very still.
Somewhere in the back, a fork hit a plate.
"I'm not saying anything about anyone's heart. I'm saying nobody should have to carry a thing like this alone."
"So tonight I've invited a member of that family to speak for himself."
She held out her hand toward our table.
"Sir? Would you come up and tell us what the Hennings are owed?"
Colby's mother took her husband's arm.
He patted her hand, and he stood.
He walked the length of the hall with his tie on and his cap folded in his fist, and three hundred people turned their heads together to watch him go.
