Chapter 21: The Church Circle
I opened the screen door, and my aunt stood there dripping on Grandpa's mat.
"I'm not coming in," Ginny said. "I know I'm not invited."
"You're getting rained on."
"I'm aware."
She held out the foil plate.
"It's fried chicken. I know it's Thursday. I've made one every Sunday since the pancake supper, and I've been eating them myself in the car, in my own driveway."
Her mouth twisted.
"I didn't know where else to take them."
I took the plate, which was still warm.
Colby had come up quietly behind me and stood in the kitchen doorway with his hat in his hands.
"I'm standing up at the circle on Sunday," she said. "In front of the women."
"What are you going to say?"
"What I did. All of it."
She swallowed.
"I'd rather you didn't come."
"I'm coming."
"Casey."
"I won't say a word, Aunt Ginny. I won't help, and I won't interrupt."
"Then why?"
"Because you told them in front of me once."
She looked at me for a long moment with water running off her hair.
Then she nodded, very slightly, and went back down the steps to her car.
The church circle meets in the basement of First Methodist at ten on Sundays, after the service, around a folding table with a percolator and a Bundt cake.
There were fourteen women, and every one of them had heard the story first.
I sat in the back on a metal chair, and Colby sat against the wall by the door with his hat on his knee.
Ginny stood up before the prayer list.
She wasn't wearing the Lions vest.
She had folded it over the back of her chair, and she held her purse in front of her with both hands.
