Chapter 23: The Anniversary
The feed store calendar on the wall of the Farm Bureau back room had finally been turned to May.
I took it personally.
It was ten minutes to eleven on a Saturday, and the room held far more than eleven folding chairs.
The county had brought its own.
The Pioneer cap man had a seat in the second row, and so did the heavy man from the co-op board, and the old man from the corner table was in the aisle with his cap on his knee.
The judge had come in his short sleeves, with a coffee can.
The Henning great-aunt sat in the blue cardigan next to Colby's mother, who had brought a thermos and a bag of cookies for the whole row.
I sat in the front row, because Grandpa always made me sit in the front row.
Colby sat on my left, with his hat on his knee.
On my right, in a chair with its back to the wall, sat my cousin.
Travis had a haircut, a flannel shirt and a pair of boots that had met a great many cows since October.
He had hauled milo, and corn, and his first load of wheat seed, and he had complained about every bushel.
Aunt Ginny sat one row back, between the Henning great-aunt and a foil plate.
She had been the first to arrive, and she had saved seats.
The lawyer came in at five to eleven in his bolo tie, with his briefcase, and a clerk behind him who carried the clock off the wall and set it on the desk.
It was the same clerk who had witnessed our wedding.
She was still a Lions Club member, and she was beaming.
"The condition has a time on it," the lawyer said. "Eleven o'clock, to the minute, the hour of the marriage."
