Chapter 11: The Report

Abby's POV

Rowan's office had glass walls on two sides and a view of the river, and his assistant's desk faced the door.

"Sit," he said.

I sat.

He did not sit.

He stood at the window with his hands behind his back and looked at me, line by line.

"You're ten minutes late," he said.

"I was changing out of your brother's hoodie."

I had said it to see what his face would do.

Nothing happened to it.

"I'll bill you for the ten minutes," I added.

"Put it on the account."

I gave him the week's report out loud.

Beckett had slept badly and eaten a banana.

He had a way of looking at the ceiling when he was thinking about something he wasn't going to say.

He had been in a good mood since Tuesday.

Rowan listened to all of it without moving.

"You're leaving things out," he said.

"I'm leaving out what isn't your business."

"I pay for what's my business."

"Then you're paying for bananas."

I reached into my bag for a pen and my fingers hit leather.

I had carried Beckett's leash since Tuesday, because I didn't trust the dorm drawer.

I pulled it out without thinking and put it on his desk.

"This is also not billable," I said.

Rowan looked down at it.

He picked it up and ran the leather through his fingers, slowly, over the brass clip and the little tag.
