Chapter 4: The Brother Pays

"Beckett," Rowan said, without looking at him. "Go to class."

"I have a free period," Beckett said.

"Then go be free somewhere else."

Beckett looked at me, then at his brother, then at me again.

"Text me if he bites," he said, and he picked up his tray.

"I don't bite," Rowan said. "I audit."

Beckett left, and a hundred and fifty people found something interesting to do with their eggs.

I took the invoice out of my bag and put it on the table.

Rowan read it slowly, and his eyes never went back over a line.

When he reached the bottom, he turned it over and checked the back.

"There's nothing on the back," I said.

"I know. I wanted to see if you'd say so."

"Is that a test?"

"It's a habit."

He laid the page flat and tapped the line about sustained eye contact.

"Fifty thousand dollars for the eye contact," he said.

"It's a service."

"Show me."

I looked at him.

He looked at me, and he didn't blink, and neither did I.

At the edge of my vision the clock above the dish return ticked forward, and my face stayed perfectly blank.

"Time," I said, after a while. "I bill hourly to anyone who isn't already paying me. Mine is a hundred and fifty an hour."

He glanced at his watch.

"We've been talking for twenty minutes."

"Fifty dollars."

He took out his wallet, counted three twenties onto the table, and slid them across.

"Ten for the eye contact," he said. "You were very good."

I had no rule for being tipped, so I took it.

"Now," Rowan said. "I have changes."

"The price is the price."

"The price is fine." He said it flatly, and I nearly dropped my fork. "I'm changing the schedule. You will not be paid five hundred thousand dollars in one transfer to a twenty-year-old with a campus laundry job. You'll be paid in installments. One hundred thousand now, and the rest in four equal payments on the first of each month."
