Chapter 10: I'm Asking
The stone hall was built for three hundred wolves, and that evening it held me, Jodie and a lot of folded chairs.
The moot supper was that night, and the pack would start filing in at dusk.
Jodie stood on the low stage with a printed card in her hand and her chin up.
"Again," she said. "Rhett says his speech. I say, 'I accept.' He puts the bracelet on."
"And then?"
"And then I read it out."
"Louder."
"I'm not shouting in my grandmother's hall."
"You're going to," I said, "so practice."
She laughed, and then she looked at me and stopped.
"You look terrible, Bronwyn. Did you sleep?"
"Not much."
I had not slept since the briefing, the Alpha's mouth at my ear, and the words he said there.
My ankle was strapped under my boot and nearly healed.
Across the hall, behind the long serving counter, a door opened onto the kitchen annex. Someone was frying onions for the supper.
I smelled grease before I saw smoke.
"Jodie," I said. "Get out."
"What?"
A pan went up in the annex with a soft whump, and orange light jumped across the ceiling.
The cook ran out, shouting, with her apron on fire.
Jodie was already moving. I grabbed a fire blanket off the wall and threw it over the cook, then went for the extinguisher by the annex door with my bad ankle screaming.
Smoke rolled out, thick and black.
I sprayed until it was empty, and the flames went down, and I turned around coughing.
My sleeve was smoking.
I hadn't noticed it catch. I slapped at it, and a hand closed round my arm.
