Chapter 6: Slot One

The alcove was a small round room with a low stone bench and a bed of dry reeds.

A warm light came from a crack in the ceiling.

Nils lowered Ruenna onto the reeds, and she pulled him down with her before he had finished straightening.

"Ruenna, your side."

"Shut up about my side."

She got both hands in his shirt and ripped it open.

Buttons skittered across the floor.

Her palms slid over his chest, and the draw came at once.

It was stronger than it had been in her flat, a long pull that started under his ribs.

It ran down through his stomach.

He groaned.

She heard it and froze.

"Is that bad?"

"No." His voice came out hoarse. "God, no."

She made a rough sound in her throat and kissed him.

It was not gentle.

She tasted of salt and iron and she bit his lower lip, and her hands went straight to his belt.

He caught her wrists.

"Slow down. You're bleeding."

"I'm healing."

She pushed one hand against the bandage.

The paste was already dry and tight over a pink line where the wound had been.

"See? You're doing it. Just you being close."

He looked at the line.

Then he looked at her face, and the look in it was so plain and so hungry that his chest hurt.

"Okay," he said.

He let go of her wrists.

She peeled off her torn shirt and tossed it behind her.

She took off the rest of her clothes and lay back in the reeds without any hurry at all.

She was lean and hard, with old scars across her ribs and her thigh.

The three red marks on her cheek had gone bright.

"You can look," she said. "I know it's a lot of scars."

"I like them."

"Liar."

"I'm not."

He bent and put his mouth to the long scar over her ribs, just under the bandage.

Her stomach went tight under his lips.

Her breath hitched.

"Nobody's ever," she began, and then lost the rest of it.

He followed the scar down.

She put her hand in his hair and held on.

When he reached the crease of her thigh she lifted her hips.

"Please," she said, with her head turned away.

"Look at me," Nils said.
