Chapter 18: Wedding Number Four
I turned off the stove.
"Did you watch it?" I said. "The file."
"Once. In his office, on April tenth, with him." The investigator breathed out. "He told me to delete my copy."
"Did you?"
"I've been doing this twenty-two years, Ms. Whitford. I don't delete things."
I sat down on the kitchen floor with my back against the cabinet.
"What's on it?"
"I'm not going to tell you on the phone. I'm getting a lawyer. When my lawyer says it's clean, you'll have it, and so will the judge. Same day."
"Why now?"
He was quiet for a while.
"Because he swore in open court there was nothing," he said. "And he'll make me swear it too. And I've got a daughter in law school."
He hung up.
I called my father.
Then I called Finn.
He came back over with Robbie asleep on his shoulder, and sat on my kitchen floor beside me until midnight, eating dry toast.
Nine days later my cousin got married.
She was the daughter of the aunt who'd lent us the "Worcester" house for Thanksgiving.
