Chapter 17: The Second Page

The scan took forty minutes, and Laurence and I spent them on a plastic bench outside the radiology door, not touching.

My whole body still remembered his.

*Don't look at her mouth. Don't look at her mouth. You are in a hospital.*

"I can hear that," I said.

"I know you can."

"Say it."

"I'm trying very hard not to look at your mouth."

"It's working badly."

"I know."

He looked at it.

I looked at the floor, and I was smiling, and I had not smiled in a hospital in six years.

The pulmonologist came out in his scrubs with a tablet.

"The lung is clearing," he said. "Better than I hoped. The antibiotic is working, and the nutrition has done more than the drugs."

I put a hand over my eyes.

"But I want to talk about the exposure," he said. "The marker on her chart points to a class of drug, not one drug. If I knew the exact compound and the dose, I could target the treatment. Without it, I'm guessing, and she has very little room for me to guess."

"The pills were in a plastic bag," I said. "They had no label."

"Does anyone have the clinic's records? A dispensing sheet, a lot number?"

Laurence stood.

"We found a cabinet," he said. "There may be paper in it. Ben is going back to look."

*Paper. For once, give me paper that is on her side.*

"The immunologist will want to see anything you find," the pulmonologist said. "The same day."
