Chapter 6: The Convenient Wedding
Our wedding guests brought more chairs than the courthouse room could hold.
The first lender arrived carrying two, with cushions tucked beneath her arm.
She said she knew how hard it was to get a good seat.
The second brought folding chairs because they were easier to transport.
The third had misunderstood and brought a small table for the gifts.
I watched Tate reach toward it before remembering where he was.
He lowered his hands and stood beside me instead.
"The room has furniture," he told them kindly.
The clerk opened the door and looked at the crowded corridor.
"We also have a wedding," she reminded us.
Joelle carried her striped sun hat beneath one arm as she directed the lenders away.
Della took the little table herself without assigning it to her son.
I found those acts more reassuring than the flowers beside the clerk's desk.
They made room for the thing we had actually chosen.
Tate had changed into a clean blue shirt and his least worn boots.
He held his cream hat against his chest, turning its brim slowly.
I touched his wrist before he could wear the edge thin.
"You can put it on the chair," I whispered.
He looked at the chairs and then back at me.
"I do not know which ones are ours," he said.
