Chapter 16: The Fence

A man in a Ridgeline hard hat climbed down out of the cab with a clipboard.

"You can't be here, miss."

"I have a key." I held it up. "I'm the only person who has a key that isn't in a drawer."

"Don't need a key." He nodded at the excavator. "We're starting with the east wall."

The east wall.

The section by the gate.

The twelve feet Jess and the crew and Linc had built back by floodlight, stone by stone, with their hands bleeding.

I put my coffee down on the path.

I walked past him and past the excavator.

I climbed the new stones the way Jess had taught us to set them, big ones at the bottom.

I sat down on top of the wall, right over the gate, with my boots dangling.

"Miss."

"I filed the garden with the town historical commission on Monday," I said. "There's a review."

"Not my department."

"It's going to be."

I called Jess.

She picked up on the first ring and said, "I'm already in the truck," before I said anything.

She came with four of the crew and a tarp and a thermos the size of a fire extinguisher.
