It took me two hours to get out of the chapel.
People kept stopping me.
The girls from my studio, the greenhouse crew, a professor who'd bought rosemary in October and wanted to shake my hand.
The old woman in the gray suit, who told me she'd voted against the building in December and wanted me to know it.
By the time I got outside, the sun was low and orange behind the hills.
I knew where he'd be.
He was sitting on the ground outside the iron gate with his back against the east wall, the section he'd built.
The commission's paper still hung in its plastic sleeve over his head.
He didn't have a key.
He'd never asked me for one.
He got up when he saw me coming.
"You didn't have to come," he said.
"I know."
I unlocked the gate.
We went in.
The garden was brown and wet and ugly.
Snow still lay in the corners, and the north beds slept under straw.
I walked to the south wall and stood under the pear.
He stopped a few feet behind me.
