I put my hand on Linc's chest and he woke up.

I handed him the phone without a word.

He read it lying on his back.

Then he set it face down on the quilt.

"Rule nine," I said.

"I don't know what he wants," he said. "That's the truth. I know what he's going to get, though."

"What's that?"

"Me. In a gown. Saying no."

Commencement was on the lawn in front of the chapel, under a white tent the size of a barn.

Four hundred seniors sweated in black polyester, and their families fanned themselves with programs.

My dad sat in the fourth row in his one suit, which he'd bought for my mother's funeral and had let out twice since.

He'd brought a cooler, which wasn't allowed.

Jess's parents sat next to him and ate his sandwiches.

They'd become best friends in about four minutes, over the subject of hay.

When they called my name, my dad stood up on his chair and whistled through his fingers.

The whole tent turned around.

Jess whistled back from the stage steps, and then the greenhouse crew did, and then half the landscape department did.
